What's in a Name?
My necklace called itself complete the other day. This is the one that lay unfinished on my desk for over a year. And just in time - I received my manuscript from the publisher and am steeped in writing for the next 4 weeks.
The only problem is... I don't know what it's name is.
This isn't usually a problem - the name usually evolves with the piece. But I have been so immersed in teaching and writing about color and color relationships that I have color vocabulary in my head... saturation, complementary, color flow, transitions... these terms and definitions oozing from my left brain. And of course, names and words are the left brain's forte. But I need to convey the emotion of this piece - it's name is important.
Where is my right brain when I need it?
Perhaps I will draw inspiration from Smadar and her visions of Latin dancers...
Flamenco
Tango
I'm also struggling to get a really good picture of the whole piece where the brown doesn't look black and the orange glows... not there yet, but getting close.
What a great piece you've got there. Breathtaking! But you've neglected it for over a year. So it might take a while, but it'll let you know it's name in time. The picture might turn out wonderful when the sun is out putting beams of light on it. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteBeverly, this is just outstanding! It must look amazing in the sunlight.
ReplyDeleteI agree that naming can be difficult. For me the first thing that comes to mind with this piece is fire and ice.
It is stunning - I love the coloring and the design - wonderful.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely. I picture something with Jewel in it for the name.
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful creation. To me it says "Coral Reef". The dark colours the depth of the ocean, the sunny water higher up caressing the corals. Apart from the beautiful colours it is also very organic! Love it!!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like fire & ice to me. It is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWow! I remember when it was simply an incredible meandering stream of color across your table! To me it's like hot lava flowing into a tropical surf...with a bit of lush carpet starting to take hold of the cooling rocks...inspired to say the least, my dear. You are a true master.
ReplyDeleteoh, this is beautiful. i have been bemoaning the fact that it has been a raging blizzard outside for the past 3 days when all i want right now is to see the crocus tips pop out; to look at your blog and see your photos of this piece was like having instant warm sunshine telling me to can the whining and get back to the studio...thanks!
ReplyDeleteAs I said last time I visited, I can't/won't/don't bead. That doesn't stop me from appreciating the phenomenal amount of work and sheer beauty that went into this. Stunning. I'm so *happy* that I subscribed - I never want to miss another thing! :)
ReplyDeleteWow- talk about a WIP or UFP that has come to completion! Can't wait to see that in person sometime. Boy, I'm gone for a week and you write an entire book on your blog! I'm going to have to go back and really study and do the exercises- they look fun. I'm pretty sure I'm mostly saturated and radiating- ha-maybe radioactive- most of the time!
ReplyDeleteHi Beverly - this necklace is awesome. I'm not very good at naming my jewellery so I won't be much help but I look forward to hearing what you decide on.

I keep coming back to this and am just in awe of how lovely it is and the skill that must have gone into creating it. I have to say that, like Anne, when I looked at it first it also made me think of something coral reefy. I just couldn't think of any really poetic name to express that. Still can't. But whatever you call it, it's exquisite.
ReplyDeleteBeverly, this is an amazing creations. Have you got the name for it? I would like to introduce your creation in www.handmade-jewelry-club.com under 'Jewelry Of The Week' if you permit me to do so :)
ReplyDeleteOMG! I had no clue who was reading my blog (thanx for the comment! or I'd have never checked or come here)& you are just so amazingly talented!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a stunner! Like so many of your other pieces. I need to know more about you & your work & your blog. I will be coming here really often now! :)
"Fire and Rain" flew out of my head when I saw it. Wonderful piece. Inspiring, even. Maybe I'll start another detailed embroidery project that takes days, and days, and even weeks.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Beverly!
My immediate thought "fire & ice"! And that's without reading any other comments first, maybe someone suggested it already? In any case, this is a super gorgeous and stunning necklace!
ReplyDeletefirestorm
ReplyDeleteit is lovely
Wow! it's gorgeous Beverly, The colours remind me of Indian textiles/embroidery.
ReplyDeleteUtterly stunning - there's something about it that made me think of a lava flow - from the hot molten rock through the cooling process eventually as the turquoise stone.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, and I can't wait for October to come around!
Been away a few weeks and am just no catching up! What a stunning piece to behold right off the bat! Just beautiful!!
